The Taipei MRT is a wonderful system. But its bastardized Wade-Giles stop names are not much help, even for those few who know the Wade-Giles system.

The "Kuting" stop is a good example of the problem. Is it pronounced Kuting, Kuding, Guting, or Guding? The answer is the third; but it is completely impossible to know that from what is written at the MRT stops and on standard maps. Thank goodness that the "English" announcements have finally been improved from outrageously poor to merely bad. (Xiao Nanmen is especially funny/ridiculous.)
